Core Question

What is marketing, really? And how does AI change what businesses need from it?

Key Insight

Marketing is not a profession — it's an umbrella term covering diverse skills that got bundled together. A copywriter, a media buyer, and a brand strategist all call themselves "marketers" — but their skill sets are completely different.

What businesses actually need (4 layers)

  1. Awareness — People know you exist (PR, SEO, ads)
  2. Value comprehension — People understand what you're worth (copywriting, demos, case studies)
  3. Conversion — People take action (sales, checkout design, pricing)
  4. Retention — People come back (email, customer service, product)

All 4 got labeled "marketing" — but they're different functions.

AI's Impact

The real scarce resource

When everyone can produce, judgment becomes the differentiator: - Knowing what to build (not just how) - Knowing what to say (not just how to write) - Knowing what works (not just what looks good)
